Bassano del Grappa and the City Museum start the year celebrating the art and the past & contemporary beauty with 2 important exhibitions.  The first one is dedicated to the Statue of Ebe made by Antonio Canova, the well-known sculptor son of our lands, born and raised in the valley between the Brenta and the Piave rivers; the second one honours the legendary figure of the photographer Ruth Orkin.

Both exhibitions are commemorative: the photoreporter would have turned 100 years last 3rd September, while this year will be the bicentenary of Canova’s  death and this exhibition would like to be prelude of a series of events dedicated to the Italian master of Neoclassicism.

Ruth Orkin, legendary photoreporter of 900

Photographer, photoreporter, director and much more. Ruth Orkin has been one of the leading figures of all the art of the twentieth century thanks to her works and personality.
The exhibition itinerary “Ruth Orkin. Legend of the photography” at the city museum of Bassano until 2nd May 2022, wants to celebrate the work of this pioneer of the photo-journalism of the centenary of her birth.
You will be able to admire the 110 works on display including “VE-Day”, “Jimmy tells a story”, “American Girl in Italy” as well as many portraits. Among the most famous, those of Robert Capa, Marlon Brando and Woody Allen. Ruth Orkin was able, in fact, to give life to the images that came out of her lens and inevitably to the imagination of the observer, whether they are single shots or sequences of frames, that’s what we would now call storytelling.
After New York and Toronto, Bassano del Grappa is the only and unmissable Italian stop in this exhibition. Having her works here fills our city with pride and it is great opportunity to be carried away by the charm of her “language”. Don’t miss it!

The eternal Hebe by Antonio Canova

The “Canova Ebe” exhibition represents a unique opportunity to admire with your own eyes the sculptural masterpiece by Antonio Canova that seemed impossible to restore.
Hebe, who in Greek mythology was the daughter of Zeus and Hera, symbol of eternal youth and cup holder of the Gods, today rises from the ashes like a phoenix. Or more correctly we should say from the fragments.
In fact, Canova’s work was the victim of the bombing of 24 April 1945 and its “remains” have been jealously guarded at the Civic Museum of the city for more than 70 years.
Reassembling the statue was considered impossible for a long time, until the modern techniques and technologies available today changed this belief into hope.
Thanks to 3D scanning and a restoration work that lasted almost a year, it was possible to bring back to life the splendid sculpture of Ebe, one of Canova’s most famous works on the occasion of the bicentenary of his death.
Don’t miss the opportunity to admire one of the most beautiful existing plaster casts made by the master of Possagno, which has finally come back to light. The exhibition will be available until May 30, 2022 in the Civic Museum of the city of Bassano, right in the place that has kept its “relics” over time.

Entrance tickets are on sale at the reception at the special rate of € 8.00 instead of 12, with no reservation of date and time.
