Exhibition “I, Canova. European genius” in Bassano del Grappa

From 15 October 2022 until 12 March 2023 at the Civic Museum of Bassano the works of the great artist Antonio Canova will be exhibited in a totally new and suggestive perspective.

2022 will mark the 200th anniversary of the death of Antonio Canova (1757-1822) and the Civic Museums of Bassano intends to celebrate this occasion and the figure of the sculptor with the exhibition “I, Canova. European genius“.

It will be a major exhibition of international importance, with loans from major Italian and foreign museums.

The exhibition will reveal a 360-degree Canova, highlighting his training, artistic maturation and his participation in European history. Thanks to a suggestive and engaging setting, the exhibition will lead the visitor through the stages of an ideal journey, first inside the creative universe of the master, then in the footsteps of the “traveler” Canova.

The exhibition itinerary will be divided into three major chapters, aimed at accompanying the visitor in the all-round discovery of the artist:

1. The man and the artist, in which the visitor will be introduced to the creative universe of Canova through the treatment of biographical aspects, his method of work and your interests.

2. Canova and Europe, where the visitor will follow an ideal itinerary through Europe with works that will allow to evoke the relationships with the sovereigns, the popes, and the great European collectors;

3. Canova and history, which will address the artist’s relationship with Napoleon, contemporary intellectuals and artists, the themes of Napoleonic thefts, Canova’s role in the restoration of the Parthenon marbles and finally Canova as a legislator.

The exhibition will include around 140 works including sculptures, paintings, drawings, volumes and precious objects, with loans from important Italian and European public and private collections. The set-up will be signed by Studio Antonio Ravalli Architetti which will enhance each work and immerse the visitor in the stages of a fascinating journey.
