At the Civic Museums of Bassano del Grappa, until October 10th, 2021, there will be an interesting exhibition that will allow tourists and citizens to discover the history of the Alpini bridge, one of the favorite meeting places for the residents of Bassano, but not only. The exhibition entitled “Palladio, Bassano and the Bridge. Invention, History, Myth” curated by Guido Beltramini, Barbara Guidi, Fabrizio Magani and Vincenzo Tiné, will tell the story of the bridge, between real events and mythology and will be open every day, except Tuesday, from 10 am to 7 pm.

The Ponte Vecchio through History

After over seven years of renovations, the Bridge of Bassano has been finally reopened a few weeks ago. The event represents a great point of pride for the residents of Bassano, and not only for them. The exhibition, that you can visit until October 10th, is a celebration but also a dutiful tribute to the national monument, symbol of the city, designed by Andrea Palladio, and then destroyed and rebuilt several times throughout history.

The exhibition will tell 500 years of history of the Alpini bridge, from the eighteenth century to today. You can admire over 60 works, among drawings by Palladio, books of the sixteenth century, ancient maps, vintage photographs and contemporary models.

Un allestimento teatrale

Barbara Guidi, scientific director of the Civic Museums of Bassano del Grappa, stated that “the exhibition is conceived as a story for images that unfolds through works, objects e documents that, duly ordered and connected, allow to retrace the salient phases of the history of this architectural artifact, highlighting its peculiarities and relating it to the historical, social and economic events of the city“.

The three themes revealed in the subtitle of the exhibition, invention-history-myth, are told also thanks to the theatrical staging, a path on the ground floor of the most recent wing of the Civic Museums which, with reflective tarpaulins and floorings, offers visitors a unique and engaging experience.

Among the most interesting works that you can admire, there are “Capriccio with Palladian buildings” of Canaletto, the original drawings by Palladio, some anonymous letters, with insults, from 18th century, the engravings of Giambattista Piranesi and Leon Battista Alberti, a landscape of Roberto Roberti and a precious calotype, that is the first photo-impressed representation of a Palladian work.

If you are passing through Bassano del Grappa extend your stay for a few days: do not miss this beautiful, and spectacular, exhibition!
